FAQs

What will the time commitment be for the fellowship?

The fellowship runs eight weeks, usually from early June to late July. Fellows commit to working 25 hours a week.

How much will I be compensated?

Fellows will be awarded a $3000 stipend for their summer work.

I have a summer vacation planned. Should I still apply?

Within reason, the City of Hazard is happy to accommodate previously made plans. We request to know in advance (there is a space in the application), and any missed time will need to be made up.

Is it okay that I don't have any experience in government?

Absolutely! This is a learning opportunity and no previous experience is necessary. We will be looking for and prioritizing students who have a general interest in local goverment or policy making, as opposed to students simply looking for a job.

I am a freshman/sophomore in high school. Should I still apply?

While we welcome any and all applications, and look forward to getting to know you, we will be prioritizng upperclassmen simply due to the academic requirements and rigor associated with the Fellowship.

What do the Fellows do?

Fellows will engage in three major activities during their time with the Fellowship:

(1) A large project on behalf of the city

(2) Shadowing key stakeholders and attending local city, county, and community meetings

(3) A common reading experience

Local government is very fluid, though, so every year brings surprises as to what we engage with and who we meet!

What is the timleine for the application process?

Applications are due by February 14th.

The Fellowship is working with third-party partners to schedule interviews and select Fellows. We hope to have the process completed by the end of March.
